Dress: western style for clothing is standard, especially for men and children. Women sometimes wear outfits that include their unique panos/strips of cloth woven on the West African narrow loom. These panos are used as sashes or dancing and also can be used as a wrap for carrying babies. It is made of used clothing from Europe and US.
Food: They have potatoes, fish (especially tuna), bananas, cassavas, yams, lobster, shrimp, mangoes, quavas, melons, and papayas, and many other recipes and dishes are made from things that have. Some more food and food producing plants they have is acacia trees, red fruit, coffee, coconuts, date palms, corn, beans, sugar cane, watermelon, shark, and flying fish.
Art: A wide array of folk arts are found in Cape Verde. Women crochet and weave. Men build ship models, carve wood and cow horn, and make musical horns from shells.
Music: Cape Verde has a rich variety of popular music, some of it imported from the communities were Cape Verdeans have settled abroad. Styles range from European style mazurkas and valzas to the rhythmically complex batuko. Most famous of all are coladeiras and mornas.
Family: The warmth and generosity of Cape Verdean family life is deeply rooted in culture and history. It is common for families to share a pot of cachu pa (stew) with relatives, neighbors, and any visitors who may drop in.
Celebrations: Important holidays include January 2th (the anniversary of the assassination of president Amilaar Cabral 1924-1973), July 5th (independence day), religious holidays include Christmas, Easter, and various saints festivals. Cape Verdeans also celebrate carnival and the days preceding lent. The Tabanka festival combines African-style shrines with Portuguese religious parade.
Schooling: The Cape Verdeans have a relatively high standard of formal education. This is partly because fo the tradition of seminary education on the island of Sao Niclau. There are high schools in the major towns and elementary schools throughout the islands. There are teacher training and technical schools but no university in Cape Verde.
Religion: the official religion of Cape Verde is Catholicism with crioulo aspects. Some other religious groups include christian, roman catholic, and several different protestant groups.
Recreatation and Entertainment: The entertainment is centered in the home. They have dances,parties ,and receptions. One of the favorite board games is Ouri a "pit and capture" game that can be traced back to ancient Egypt. The favorite sport in Cape Verde is futbol (soccer).
